We are currently having issues with our checkout process because the FedEx calculations can take some time to be processed through FedEx's web services.
We are about to release flat-rate shipping to help overcome this. However, we would like to keep a 3-day and overnight option to be calculated via FedEx. This will be used by a minority of our customer base and as such we would like to enable these options only after a customer has clicked on a link to explicitly show these options.
