Disabling payment method based on order value

I wanted to check whether there is any way to do this currently? E.g. only allow a certain payment method to be selected if the order size is under a certain amount? I looked through the extensions and I guess one option would be to create a new extension based on the paymentpershipping invoice, but if there is any easier way to do this, I'd be grateful for any pointers.
