this can be happing due to one of these reasons
1. incompatible encoding in your virtuemart's language files in /administrator/components/com_virtuemart/languages/common/YOULANG.php
2. a php error in the language file

Please convert the lang file to utf8 and charset line should say:
'charset' => 'UTF-8',

Please check the file of any other errors such as apostrophies and similarly. If you still have the problem, send us the file and we will fix it for you.
