Trying to combine two step and three column templates

This is a great addition to VirtueMart. Thank you.
I like the functionality of the two step template. However, once the customer clicks the "check out" button, I want to go to a check out page that looks like the three column template.
My issues with the three column that I'm trying to work around are:
- no opportunity to upsell products
- I want an editable shopping cart at all times.
I've tried to merge the two, but I'm now very confused.
Are they any examples are instructions for doing this?
